So How Big Was This Week’s Support for Ahmadinejad

I went to Ahmadinejad's big rally-and-fire-spitting extravaganza in Karaj today. It was probably the largest gathering he's had, so far as his provincial visits go. There were around 22,000 people present. It was also the first time in two decades Sepah, the Revolutionary Guards, provided security for a government rally in full uniform. There were about 250 officers I could count on the ground. Overall, there were about 3,500 security personnel -- Sepah, NAJA, Basij -- on rooftops, lining the street, at the stadium.

Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Agency, tells Al Jazeera that it is Iran's right to refine uranium to whatever level it needs. Saying that his scientists have the potential to enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels, he warns Barack Obama, the US president, not to test Iran, saying there could be unimaginable consequences if he takes "any wrong step".

Break the silence on Iran

Three decades ago, the Iranian revolution inspired generations of Arabs and infused in them a spirit of resistance to foreign intervention. It came at a time when many Arabs had been disheartened by the 1979 Camp David agreement between Israel and Egypt, and sparked hope in a regional power that could stand up to Israel. Egypt's exit from the equation of the Israeli-Arab conflict was a blow to the Palestinian and Arab struggle to end Israeli occupation and achieve self-determination for the dispossessed Palestinian people.

Iran criticises US missile move

Iran has criticised a US move to expand its missile defence systems in the Gulf, calling it a "political ploy" that will increase Washington's military presence in the region. Ali Larijani, the parliament speaker, said on Tuesday that upgrading the missile defence systems in the Persian Gulf would only create more trouble for US forces.

Iran No problem with nuclear plan

Iran's president has indicated his country may be ready to ship its uranium abroad for enrichment, in line with a UN-backed proposal. For months Iranian officials have criticised the plan proposed by six world powers last year for Iran to send out the bulk of its low-enriched uranium to be processed and returned as nuclear fuel to power its reactor

The tragicomedy of Iran sanctions

However, Iran's nuclear technology has advanced faster than expected and a 2007 report by the US government accountability office (GAO) found that "since 2003, the Iranian government has signed contracts reported at about $20bn with foreign firms to develop its energy resources. Further, sanctioned Iranian banks may fund their activities in currencies other than the dollar". What the GAO report could not foresee - because it had forgotten about its domestic accountability issues - was that the 2007 US sanctions against Iranian banks ironically ensured Iran's immunity from the global financial crisis that was about to explode. Iran was among the few major economies in the world not to be severely affected by the crisis.

Nuclear dilemma Israel vs. Iran

The year, as I recall, was 1994. The setting: a small, discreet restaurant in Herzliya, a northern suburb of Tel Aviv. During dinner with an Israeli official, I expressed the opinion that all efforts to deny weapons of mass destruction to so-called rogue Middle Eastern regimes, whether through sanctions, embargoes or otherwise, could at best be considered delaying actions

we should continue and enhance espionage and sabotage of the Iranian nuclear program. DC to Lula Nice try, but too late

It didn't take too long for Washington to put Lula firmly in his place. Brazil's President thought he had scored a diplomatic coup last weekend, by persuading Iran to ship 12 tonnes of partially-enriched uranium out of the country. In many ways he had. Washington, after all, had failed to achieve the same goal last October.

Iran refuses enrichment halt

Iran will refuse to talk about stopping its enrichment of uranium at the next meeting in January on its nuclear programme with six major powers, the country's chief nuclear negotiator says. "I am announcing openly and clearly that Iran will not discuss a uranium enrichment halt in the next meeting in Istanbul with major powers," Saeed Jalili said on Tuesday, after two days of talks with the six powers in Geneva. Any discussions between world powers and Iran on Tehran's disputed nuclear programme must be based on co-operation, he said, and not pressure.

Iran’s ‘involvement’ – Secret Iraq Files

The US has also long blamed Iran for some of the deadliest unconventional attacks in Iraq, particularly the growth in popularity of explosively formed penetrators (EFP), an especially lethal form of IED. It is difficult to determine from these documents whether those allegations are true - though in a few cases, they offer reason to doubt the official US line. In February 2007, for example, the US claimed that a weapons cache uncovered in Hillah in Babil province showed evidence of Iranian involvement. 'The new evidence includes infrared sensors, electronic triggering devices and information about plastic explosives used in bombs that the Americans say lead back in Iran.'

US and Iran The best of enemies

US-Iranian relations have taken a turn for the worse. The time for hands extended in friendship has been replaced by menacing fists, as both sides ratchet-up the rhetoric. The US has tried to be the dominant superpower in the Middle East for decades. With hundreds of thousands of US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, on either side of Iran's borders, Tehran feels surrounded.

Iran says arms seized in Nigeria misunderstanding

Iran's foreign minister said Monday that the issue of an alleged Iranian arms shipment intercepted in Nigeria was a "misunderstanding" that has been settled. Nigeria says the artillery rockets and other weapons, found at a Lagos port last month in shipping containers labeled as building supplies, originated in Iran and may have been destined for Nigerian politicians intending violence if they lose in upcoming elections. Nigeria said last week it would take action against Iran if an investigation shows it violated international law and U.N. sanctions.

German city fathers refuse to meet visiting Iranian delegation

It would not surprise most people that the Iranian delegation chose to avoid the historical truth of the Holocaust or Shoah. But what is heartening is what their German hosts did. The Weimar City Council refused to meet the guests from Shiraz, Iran. Their message was clear. The Germans decided, as Warren L. Miller has written, that if the Iranians "choose historical revisionism over historic truth and prejudice over tolerance, then they were not welcome in respectable company, no matter what other values or interests they might share."

VOA’s duplicitous Pro-Islamic regime Broadcasts

Massive budget increases for the Voice of America's Persian News Network (PNN) since 2006 have quadrupled the number of broadcasting employees without enhancing the quality of the programs they produce or the audience they reach. Worse, when it comes to influencing behavior, or even just promoting a culture of democratic values, we are getting no bang for our bucks. In many cases, PNN's programming actually has made things worse by making the United States appear a feckless power, uninterested in the struggle of the Iranian people for freedom.
